Fields of War is structured to locate the numerous military engagements in northern France and Belgium and to bring both the casual tourist and the ardent battlefield enthusiast to sites chosen for their historical significance and remaining commemorations or battlefield structures. Each war and each battlefield are described and toured in a simple to follow format which provides the visitor the opportunity to view and understand their places in history.

Each of the six major wars is introduced in its political context and closed with its consequences. Overview maps describe the geographic boundaries of the participants and locate major military engagements. Chosen battles are numbered, named, and arranged chronologically for easy access by historical period. Pertinent facts regarding the armies and leadership in each engagement are presented in an easy to follow informational box which also provides each battlefield's location from Paris and a nearby major city. The military actions which occurred during each battle are briefly reviewed. A battlefield map indicates the military units engaged, locates the chosen battlefield sites, and provides icons which mark additional sites of potential interest. Clear and concise battlefield tour instructions bring the visitor to each site. A brief description of local events presents the significance of each battlefield site. Insert pages provide a variety of period and contemporary photographs of the battles.
